Norwich VT Community Profile & History
Norwich, Vermont is situated along the Connecticut River on the New Hampshire border. First chartered in 1861, Norwich was the original home of Norwich University, which moved to Northfield in 1866 after a fire devastated the campus. Norwich is also the current home of the Montshire Museum of Science.
Hanover, New Hampshire and Norwich, Vermont, are at the heart of what is known as the Upper Valley. A scenic tapestry of historic villages built up along the banks of the Connecticut River, the Upper Valley offers a bounty of cultural and recreational attractions, including shops, museums, hiking trails and ski areas. Hanover, the home of Dartmouth College, has a compact, attractive, and lively business district which complements the university and its cultural offerings. Norwich, just across the river, captures the essence of a small New England village. A rope ferry was the first link between Hanover and Norwich and the towns have been closely associated ever since. Each neighboring town in the valley has a character of its own, ranging from industrial and commercial centers to quiet rural villages.
