Montpelier VT Community Profile & History

Montpelier, Vermont is located in a picturesque valley along the Winooski River in Central Vermont. The nation's smallest state capital, Montpelier's intimate size, historic neighborhoods, and diverse community make it a wonderful city to visit, live, and do business.

Originally inhabited by Native Americans, Montpelier was first chartered in 1781 as a grant to the settlers from Massachusetts. The first settlement was established along the North Branch in 1787, when Vermont was still an independent republic.By the time statehood was achieved, and the settlement was organized as a town, Montpelier had a population of 113. The early years of the community saw rapid growth with an influx of settlers who built saw and grist mills, roads, schools, churches and inns.

In 1805, Montpelier was selected as the permanent home of the State Legislature, largely owing to its central location and local support. While best known as Vermont's capital city today, Montpelier is also home to several institutions of higher learning, the headquarters of the National Life Insurance Company, and an abundance of historical and architectural attractions. The city remains a regional center for the arts and entertainment, and several major ski resorts are just a short drive away.
