Manchester VT Community Profile & History
Manchester, Vermont is a rarity in rural Vermont - a cosmopolitan center that has, for a century, been a retreat for those seeking quality shopping, excellent entertainment and a reinvented downtown that is praised for its preserved historic character. Manchester offers designer shopping, first class art galleries and museums, Broadway-quality theater, world-class musical performances and outdoor activities to challenge the urban adventurer.
Nestled in a scenic mountain valley at the foot of Mount Equinox in southwestern Vermont, Manchester's rustic atmosphere has attracted visitors for over a century, including Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln, who built a second home - a mansion, actually - in Manchester in 1905. The home, Hildene, is open for tours during the summer months, and opens its 412 acres of landscaped grounds with mountain views to cross country skiers in the winter, with horse-drawn wagon rides available as well. Many of the mansions (i.e. second homes) built in the 1800s have been restored and opened to guests as inns - with more than 70 lodging properties in the area, many are accessible to top-of-the-line designer outlet shopping via a mile-long marble sidewalk and nearby park-and-walk lots. Aside from skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice skating and snowmobiling in the winter, outdoor enthusiasts can hike the 3,815-foot Mount Equinox (which has a car road for the less adventurous), fish or inner-tube the world-famous Batten Kill trout stream, bike or horseback along scenic mountain trails, take classes at the Equinox Hotel's Range Rover driving school or watch the daily feeding of the hawks at the British School of Falconry.
