Wickford RI Community Profile & History
Wickford, Rhode Island is nestled along the waterfront of Narragansett Bay in an area that is considered one of the best-protected natural harbors in the eastern United States. The original town center of North Kingstown, it is a place where time seems to have stopped in the 1820's. In Wickford you will find what is said to be the most dense concentration of original late Revolutionary and Federal period houses anywhere in New England. Old churches, quaint shops and beautiful gardens blend with historic homes to create an image of village life unchanged through the ages.
The village was first established in about 1637, when Roger Williams bought a parcel of land from Narragansett chief Canonicus and set up a trading post here. At about the same time, a religious dissident from Gloucester, England named Richard Smith established a trading post near the village on Narragansett Bay. Smith purchased Williams' trading post in 1651 and gradually expanded his holdings into what was later called "Cocumscussoc Plantation". Many of the settlement's homes were destroyed during King Philip's War in 1675 and 1676. One of the homes, known as Smith's Castle, was rebuilt in 1678; still standing today, it has become one of the most popular historic sites in the region. In the 18th century, the rejuvenated village emerged as a bustling port and shipbuilding center.
Thanks to the efforts of residents and local organizations, the village remains predominantly rural in nature today, with stunning natural and historic scenery, a thriving arts community, and a wide array of galleries, antique shops and restaurants throughout. The village also boasts a full calendar of cultural events and seasonal festivities, include the Wickford Art Festival, held each July since 1962 and attended by thousands; the Harbour Festival in September, with several boat races, live performances, great seafood, arts & crafts and children's entertainment; Spring Fair at the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace, the Smith's Castle Strawberry Festival, the Colonial Harvest Festival, Christmas at the Castle and a summer concert series on the Town Dock.
