West Warwick RI Community Profile & History
West Warwick, Rhode Island is a small town with a big population, ranking 10th out of 39 cities and towns in the state. It has just under 8 square miles of land, which are mainly mainly comprised of a valley carved out by the Pawtuxet River. Originally comprising the industrial and population center of Warwick, it was incorporated separately in 1913. Some of the nation's first textile mills were built here, a number of which still stand today. Several small villages developed around the town's many millsites, including Centerville, Clyde, Crompton, Natick, Phenix, River Point and Wescott. Presently the community is undergoing significant expansion, and residents look forward to a prosperous future.
European traditions have been preserved in West Warwick with the popular St. Patrick's Day festivities and the Portuguese Holy Ghost Festival. The town's first St. Patrick's Day Parade was held in 1960, and over the decades the annual event has attracted statewide recognition, with thousands of spectators, many dignitaries and generous media coverage. The Portuguese Holy Ghost Festival, held annually for the past 65 years, commemorates the kindness of the generous Portuguese Queen Isabella, who provided food for her country's poor.
The West Warwick school system is comprehensive, including an elementary school, middle school and high school. Popular recreational areas include Riverpoint Park, which features a riverwalk along the Pawtuxet and an adjacent bike path.
