South Kingstown RI Community Profile & History

South Kingstown, Rhode Island has the good fortune of being strategically located at the crossroads of major transportation networks, but maintains an excellent balance between the fast pace of city life and the close-knit social fabric of small-town New England.

South Kingstown boasts a rich colonial heritage stretching over nearly four centuries. In 1637, Roger Williams established a temporary trading post at the intersection of two major Native American thoroughfares, the Pequot Path and the major east-west route of the Narragansett people between their winter and summer villages. Williams established permanent residence at the post in 1643 and stayed for nearly eight years, trading with the Narragansett Indians, farming, and raising goats on Queen's Island. In 1651, Williams, needing funds for a trip to England so that he could secure Rhode Island's colonial charter, sold his land to Richard Smith, a fellow trader.

Smith would eventually acquire a parcel of land approximately three miles wide and nine miles long. In 1674, Kings Towne was founded on this land by the colonial government. Almost immediately, the town was riven by strife when it became the epicenter of King Philip's war, a conflict between the Narragansett and Wampanoag people and the inhabitants of the Connecticut, Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay Colonies.

By the end of battle in 1676, the Native Americans had been disposessed of the lands, and European colonial expansion began. Settlement soon began to increase so rapidly that the colonial government separated the town into North and South in 1722.

South Kingstown is widely renowned as a good place to live, with high levels of community participation, good municipal services including excellent schools and a pride in its history. The town has attracted high technology manufacturing and corporate headquarters as well as a wide mix of other commercial enterprises.

The present-day community is comprised of several historic villages, which include Curtis Corner, Green Hill, Indian Lake Shore, Kingston, Matunuck, Middlebridge, Peace Dale, Perryville, Rocky Brook, Snug Harbor, Tuckertown, Usquepaugh, Wakefield, and West Kingston.
