North Providence RI Community Profile & History

North Providence, Rhode Island was set off from Providence in 1765, but on three separate occasions sections of it were reannexed to the capital, with an additional piece of land joined to Pawtucket. The town's early history is closely intermingled with both neighboring communities because of these annexations. Established by Roger Williams in 1636, the town remained largely rural until the Industrial Revolution of the early 19th century, when several mills were built along the Seekonk and Wanasquatucket Rivers.

The community is centrally located in the Providence metropolitan area, bordering several suburban communities. Major highways provide easy access to the town from any point in the state along with the major metropolitan areas of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Although North Providence is the smallest town in the state, its size has not impeded it from becoming a bustling suburban community. One of its main thoroughfares, Mineral Spring Avenue, offers a myriad of goods and services. Popular recreational sites include Governor Notte Park, which features a freshwater beach, tennis courts, a ball field, paddleboats, picnic sites and a waterfall.

The community has enjoyed a significant rate of residential growth in the past several years. Over two-thirds of the town's residential civilian labor force is employed in various occupations throughout the state. The community is home to Rhode Island College, which is located in the northern part of the town. North Providence offers all of the conveniences of city living in a close-knit suburban atmosphere.
