New Shoreham RI Community Profile & History
New Shoreham, Rhode Island was incorporated in 1672 and remains the only town on Block Island. It is the smallest town in the smallest state in America.
Block Island boasts a rich and illustrious history spanning nearly 500 years. The island was first sighted in 1524 by Giovanni da Verranzo and in 1614 it was charted by Dutch explorer Adriaen Block, who gave the island its name. The first wave of European settlers arrived in 1661, at which point the island was part of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. In 1672 Block Island became a part of the Rhode Island colony, and the town of New Shoreham was established subsequently.
Today, New Shoreham is a popular tourist destination with a variety of historical and natural landmarks. The island is home to two historic lightouses at its northern and southern extremes, along with the Mohegan Bluffs, a series of tall clay cliffs which were once the site of a battle between the Mohegan and Manisee Indian tribes. Other popular attractions include Rodman's Hollow, a 230-acre glacial basin near the southern shore of the island that features several walking trails, and the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge, which stretches across the sand dunes of the northern shore and features an abundance of native species.
Residents and visitors reach the island via ferry, and the island is known for its excellent cycling routes. Each summer, the island hosts Block Island Race Week, a competitive sailboat racing event that draws large crowds.
