Cranston RI Community Profile & History
Cranston, Rhode Island is part of the large metropolitan area of Providence and is located just south of the capital city at the mouth of Narragansett Bay. Incorporated in 1910, it is one of the major commercial and industrial cities of Rhode Island today.
William Arnold, a follower of Roger Williams and one of the so-called "Providence Proprietors," became the first Englishman to settle in what is now Cranston when he built a home near Pawtuxet Falls in 1638. When the area was originally incorporated as a town in 1754, it included parts of what are now the Elmwood, South Providence, and Washington Park villages of modern-day Providence.
Cranston today is a bayside community and a city of contrasts. Heavily populated in the east, it remains largely rural, with some scattered subdivisions in the west. Popular recreational and historic sites include the Budlong Pool, one of the largest outdoor swimming pools in the country; Governor Sprague Mansion, built circa 1790 and formerly home to an influential family of business and political leaders; Pawtuxet Village, founded nearly 400 years ago and long a popular seaside resort area; Oaklawn Village, one of America's earliest residential suburbs; and Furnace Brook, once home to the region's first industries. With 16 different sites on the National Register of Historic Places, the city maintains strong ties with its illustrious past even as its proximity to America's academic and cultural centers points towards the future.
