Coventry RI Community Profile & History
Coventry, Rhode Island is the largest community in the state, sprawling over 64.8 square miles of picturesque land and 2.6 miles of inland water. First settled as a part of Warwick in the early 18th century, the town was incorporated separately in 1741.
In 1800, Coventry was primarily an agricultural town with a population that lived on widely scattered farms or in small hamlets, but the growth of the textile industry wrought dramatic changes in the town throughout the 19th century. The early 1800s saw many small textile mills built along the Pawtuxet River, and while the decline of the textile industry forced mill closings by the early decades of the 20th Century, many of the historic buildings remain well-preserved. Several of the old textile mill villages still stand, including Quidnick Village (the oldest), Anthony Village, Arkwright Village, Harris Village, Washington Village, Coventry Center Village, Summit Village, and Greene Village. Several antique homes survive in good condition, including the General Nathanael Greene Homestead, Waterman Tavern and the Paine Homestead.
In addition to bountiful historic sites, the town offers a number of first-rate parks and recreation areas. Carbuncle Pond and Johnson's Pond offer fishing and water sports, while the 860-acre George B. Parker Woodland features an extensive network of trails past old farm sites, a quarry, brooks and several stone cairns of unknown origin.
Today, while the western portion of town remains predominantly rural in nature, the eastern section is one of the most rapidly growing residential communities in Rhode Island. With a proud heritage and an eye on the future, Coventry stands a beacon of New England virtues past and present.
