Yorktown NY Community Profile & History
Yorktown, New York is a town in northern Westchester County. Originally inhabited by the Mohegan tribe, the community was named in honor of Yorktown, Virginia – site of a decisive Revolutionary War battle – and incorporated in 1788. Just over an hour's drive from New York City, Yorktown is an affluent residential community and retail center for the region. Home to the Jefferson Valley Mall, the town is a hot spot for local shoppers, though the commercial district is dwarfed by the town's 1400 acres of community and state parks. The 125-acre park at Turkey Mountain offers stunning vistas of the Hudson Highlands, Bear Mountain and the New York City skyline, while the foot path of the North County Trailway provides a scenic route through the town. Other popular attractions in town include two public 18-hole golf courses, Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park and the 730-acre Teatown Lake Reservation.
