Putnam Valley NY Community Profile & History
Putnam Valley, New York is a town in the southwest part of Putnam County, New York. Settled in about 1740, the community was incorporated as the "Town of Quincy" in 1839 after separating from neighboring Philipstown. It is believed that residents did not agree with the political views of the town's namesake, former President John Quincy Adams, and thus elected to change the name to Putnam Valley in 1840.
Largely rural in nature today, the town is conveniently located less than an hour's drive from New York City. Residents have dubbed Putnam Valley the "Town of Lakes" for the four large bodies of water that dominate the town's natural landscape: Oscawana Lake, Putnam Lake, Lake Peekskill and Roaring Brook Lake. Nestled in the foothills of the Hudson Highlands, the town is noted for its many acres of parks and recreational areas. Leonord Wagner Memorial Park on Oscawana Lake offers swimming, picnicking and the town-sponsored Sunset Series, a full program of recreational activities, cultural events and performances during the summer months. Located partially within the town's borders, Clarence Fahnestock State Park sprawls over more than 10,000 acres of scenic wilderness and includes a portion of the Appalachian Trail. The park offers numerous hiking trails, an environmental center, a beach on Canopus Lake and fishing on four ponds and two lakes. Popular activities offered at the park include camping, cross-country skiing, cycling, sledding, ice skating, snowmobiling and boating.
