Peekskill NY Community Profile & History

Peekskill, New York is a small city in Westchester County. Just over an hour's drive from New York City, the city offers a bounty of historical scenery, numerous recreational and cultural attractions, a thriving business climate and gorgeous views of the Hudson River.

Originally inhabited by native peoples, Peekskill was formally purchased from the Mahican Indians by New Amsterdam resident Jan Peeck in 1684. European settlement began in the early 1700s, and the city emerged as an important manufacturing center during the American Revolutionary War, with the many mills along Peek's Creek providing gunpower, leather, planks and flour for Continental Army. In the spring 1777, an invading British force of a dozen vessels on the Hudson River launched an attack on the city's industrial apparatus, and a second attack in October prompted the Continental Army to relocate its Hudson Valley command to nearby West Point.

Peekskill was incorporated as a village within the town of Cortlandt in 1816, at which point it was firmly established as a thriving industrial and trade center for the Hudson Highlands region. In 1940, the community was formally separated from Cortandt and incorporated as a city. Urban renewal projects were initialized by City Hall in the 1970's, tranforming the downtown into a thriving historical district and, with the purchase of the city's formerly busy waterfront, developing the beautiful Riverfront Green Park. In 1981, the city opened the Paramount Center for the Arts, and the recent completion of the High Tech Art Loft Complex brings the city one step closer to its stated objective of creating an Arts District.

Other popular attractions in he city include Depew Park, the historic Peekskill Freight Depot, and the 1,500 acre Blue Mountain Reservation, which offers miles of trails for mountain biking, walking and nature study, fishing, and hikes to the tops of Mt. Spitzenberg and Blue Mountain. Just across the Hudson River is the sprawling Bear Mountain State Park, which includes a section of the Appalachian Trail and offers, biking, hiking, boating, swimming, cross-country skiing, ice-skating, camping, a zoo, trailside museums and even a hotel.
