Patterson NY Community Profile & History
Patterson, New York is a town in Putnam County, New York. First settled in about 1731, the community was founded from parts of Frederickstown and Southeast in 1795, at which point it was known as Franklin. In 1808, the town was renamed for local farmer Matthew Paterson, who sometimes spelled his name with two t's.
Once home to scattered manufacturing centers along tributaries of the Hudson River, the town emerged as a popular summer resort with the arrival of the railroads in the mid-19th century. In 1930, the State Line Golf and Country Club in association with the Smadbecks' New York Daily Mirror Holding Co. bought five failing farms in Putnam County and New Fairfield, Connecticut. Morlock Brook was dammed, flooding the tract and creating the 200-acre Putnam Lake. The area around Putnam Lake was divided into 11,000 20' by 100' building lots, which were to be occupied by summer cottages, general stores, restaurants, gas stations, dance pavilions, and taverns. New York Daily Mirror first published advertisements for the community in 1931, and 75 percent of the lots were sold in the first year. 2000 homes were built by 1932, which made Putnam Lake the most densely populated area of town, if only for the months before labor day. Some families made Putnam Lake their year-round residence, and a school house was constructed where the VFW currently stands on Fairfield Drive.
Nestled in the hills of the scenic Hudson River Valley, this historic town offers the natural splendor of the countryside within easy reach of New York City. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the stunning colonial architecture of Patterson Village and Haviland Hollow and a wide range of outdoor recreational activities at the William Clough Preserve, Wonder Lake State Park, the 6,000-acre Great Swamp and the Thunder Ridge Ski Area.Patterson New York Community Information
