Ossining NY Community Profile & History
Ossining, New York is a town in Westchester County. Originally settled by Frederick Philipse, a British Loyalist, in 1685, the land that now comprises the community was confiscated by the State of New York during the Revolutionary War in 1779. In 1813, the village of Sing Sing (derived from the Mohegan phrase "Sint Sinck," which means "stone upon stone") was incorporated, soon emergeing as a major port and industrial center for the region.
In 1845, the New York State Legislature created a new town out of what had been the northern part of Mount Pleasant. A local Indian authority suggested the name Ossinsing, a variation of the "Sing Sing" moniker, and in 1846 the second "s" was removed to ease pronunciation. In 1901, village officials in "Sing Sing" chose to adopt the name "Ossining" as well.
Now a bustling commuter town on the eastern shore of the Hudson River, the community offers a variety of opportunities for sightseeing, recreation, and leisure. Popular sights include the Maryknoll Catholic School house, Jug Tavern, a thriving historic downtown district, the Squire House and the antique estates of the Sparta District. Less than one hour's drive from New York City, the town offers excellent schools, a thriving local economy, and the relaxed pace of a small town within easy reach of America's largest city.
