Katonah NY Community Profile & History
Katonah, New York is a hamlet in the town of Bedford. Named for Chief Katonah, the American Indian leader from whom the land was purchased by English colonists in 1680, the community was originally known as Whitlockville. The hamlet was moved to its present site in 1897, when "Old Katonah" was flooded to create the Cross River reservoir. More than 50 buildings were moved by horse along timber tracks to the new site, located near the town of Bedford's present northern boundary.
A quiet commuter town today, the hamlet offers a historic downtown, stunning rural scenery and easy access to major business districts in White Plains, Mount Kisco, and New York City. Popular attractions include the John Jay Homestead, former home of the first Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, the Museum of Art, scenic Bedford Road and the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts.
