Cortlandt Manor NY Community Profile & History
Cortlandt Manor, New York is a village in the town of Cortlandt. Mostly residential today, the village was first settled by the Van Cortlandt family in 1677. The site of several skirmishes during the American Revolutionary War, the village was formally established in 1788 and remained a small farming town until the 1950's, when increased transportation options and urban sprawl brought many new residents.
A thriving commuter town with easy access to major business centers in White Plains and New York City, Cortlandt has maintained a largely rural atmosphere of forested hills, wetlands and spectacular views of the Hudson River. Popular local attractions include Van Cortlandt Manor, built in 1665 and now a National Historic Landmark; the Half Moon, a replica of the ship Henry Hudson used to explore the Hudson River that houses a traveling historical museum; the 834-acre Teatown Lake Reservation; and the Croton/Cortlandt Center for the Arts.
