Cold Spring NY Community Profile & History
Cold Spring, New York , also known as Cold Spring-on-Hudson, is a village of Philipstown, New York. Incorporated in 1846, the village is bordered by the Hudson River on the west and bound by Hudson Highlands State Park to the north. The historic downtown offers an array of lovingly preserved 19th century buildings and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Less than 90 minutes' drive from New York City, the village enjoys scenic views of West Point, Storm King Mountain and the Constitution Marsh.
The West Point Foundry, an early ironworks established to remedy deficiencies in national armaments after the war of 1812, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places and is currently the site of a major archaeological study. The 6,000 acre Hudson Highlands State Park offers scenic views, kayaking, canoeing, and an extensive network of hiking trails. Breakneck Ridge, the park's best-known trail, rises 1,250 feet in just ¾ of a mile. Other popular attractions in and around Cold Spring include the Manitoga Preserve, Bear Mountain Bridge, Fahnestock State Park and Recreation Area, Bannerman's Island and the Garrison Art Center.
