Briarcliff Manor NY Community Profile & History
Briarcliff Manor, New York is a village in Westchester County. Shared between the towns of Mount Pleasant and Ossining, the community was originally part of the vast land holdings of Dutchman Frederick Philipse, who owned the stretch of land spanning from Spuyten Duyvil in the Bronx to the Croton River. The Philipses, who were loyal to the crown, lost their land after the American Revolution.
In 1890, Walter W. Law established Briarcliff Farm on 232 acres of land in northern Westchester County; Law expanded his holdings to 5,000 acres and founded the present-day village a few years later. It is said that 'manor' was added to the village's name after Law's friend Andrew Carnegie jokingly referred to Law as the "Laird of Briarcliff Manor" and the name stuck.
Now a bustling commuter town and a popular retail destination, the community offers award-winning schools, tree-lined streets bounded by majestic country estates, gorgeous views of the Hudson River, and more than 172 acres of community parkland, all within easy reach of New York City.
