Bedford NY Community Profile & History

Bedford, New York is a town in Westchester County, New York. Founded on a land purchase made by Puritans from Stamford, Connecticut in 1680, the community became a part of the Connecticut territory in 1697. In 1700, the settlement was made a part of New York following a royal decree issued by King William III to settle a boundary dispute. The community served as the county seat of Westchester County during part of the American Revolutionary War, from the Battle of White Plains in October 1776 until it was burned by the British on July 11, 1779. After the war, the town served as one of two county seats with White Plains until 1870.

A quiet commuter town today, the community offers stunning rural scenery and easy access to major business districts in White Plains, Mount Kisco, and New York City. Built in 1787, the historic Court House in the center of town is Westchester County's oldest surviving government building. Several other historic sites are clustered around the town green. In nearby Katonah sits the John Jay Homestead, former home of the first Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, along with the Katonah Museum of Art, scenic Bedford Road and the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts. The village of Bedford Hills is home to a significant business district and the historic Town House.
