Pembroke NH Community Profile & History

Pembroke, New Hampshire is a small, scenic town located near the state capital in Concord. Pembroke received its name from Governor Benning Wentworth in honor of the Earl of Pembroke, England. The word Pembroke means “head of the foam.”

In 1725, a group of Massachusetts colonists clashed with Native Americans in this area in an attempt to drive them out of the territory. The King of England granted land in the area to the survivors of the Indian war. In 1759, the Town of Pembroke was formally named and incorporated by Governor Wentworth.

During the Industrial Revolution, a number of large mills were built along the banks of the Suncook River, just north of the Merrimack River. Three sides of the town are defined by the course of three rivers: the Soucook, the Merrimack and the Suncook. These rivers and their tributaries have played an important part in the history and geology of Pembroke.

The Town of Pembroke has many uniquely different types of environments. The urban center of town, historically known as Suncook, is located just north of the confluence of the Suncook and Merrimack Rivers. A wide variety of businesses occupy historic 19th century buildings along the tree-lined streets. Development along the main access corridor of Route 3 is characterized by large early New England homes.

The Buck Street area of town is largely agricultural, with several old farms still operating along the floodplain of the Suncook River. The center and northern areas of Pembroke are noted for their sparsely settled development pattern. These areas are characterized by large house lots and a rural wooded environment.

Pembroke’s main formal recreation area is Memorial Field, located on a plain at the junction of the Suncook and Merrimack Rivers. The Recreation Commission offers a summer swimming program and recreation program for the town’s children. In addition, the town has constructed 4 tennis courts to be used by the school and the public. Pembroke is also home to Plausawa Valley Country Club, an 18 hole semi-private golf course open to the public.

The Town of Pembroke features three conservation areas and a town forest. These areas are used for hiking, cross-country skiing, fishing and nature-watching. A number of regional recreational areas are located in close proximity to Pembroke. The Bear Brook State Park in Allenstown is a four-season recreational area offering swimming, hiking, fishing, snowmobiling and cross country skiing. Other state parks are located throughout southern New Hampshire, and the major four-season recreational areas of the White and Green Mountains are just an hour’s drive away.
