Pelham NH Community Profile & History

Pelham, New Hampshire combines the best of all possibilities as a community. A rural setting, but with easy access to major cities. Pelham has a good proximity to I-93 and is within the vicinity of area mall traffic, ideally situated for commerce spanning both New Hampshire and Massachusetts, its bordering neighbor. Many Massachusetts shoppers drive through Pelham's main business area on Rt. 38 to access local malls in adjoining Salem.

Yet Pelham remains rural and attractive, and is much like it appeared in the 1800's, with a solid school department, good recreational facilities and public beaches, strong police and fire departments, thriving town government, and an active library. Pelham continues to see a healthy share of new houses, and has attracted the inclusion of several new business franchises this year.

Opportunities for involvement include the Lions Club, K of C, a Masonic Temple, a PTA, Friends of the Library, St. Patrick's Women's Guild, Friends of Recreation, Junior Friends of the Library, Odessy of the Mind, active community access television and many more local benevolences. Pelham is a friendly lively, close-knit community with room for many interests.

Pelham sponsors activities such as annual Old Home Day event, held in September. Pelham Old Home Day attracts thousands of people from all over the New Hampshire and even the New England region. This large, town-wide event boasts crafts, auctions, activities, a parade, rides & games, performances, and quintessential New England fare.

The town hosts other annual fairs a Haunted House - St. Patrick's Fair, held in May, the Sherburne School Fair in December and the Library's Haunted House/Lion's Club Halloween Party in October, Yultide celebration sponsored by the firefighters assoc., 4th of July celebration and a Memorial Day parade. All of these events bring out the support of area residents, who rally to make things happen.

Potential in the town abounds. It is refreshingly rural, yet close to major cultural areas, such as Concord, Manchester and Boston. It's a comfortable community where everyone knows everyone and all pitches in to help out. The town is a people community, with an independent spirit and a sense of history.
