Marlborough NH Community Profile & History
Marlborough, New Hampshire was first granted in 1752 as Monadnock Number 5, was one of the fort towns first known only by number. The town was at one time called Oxford, then New Marlborough, but was incorporated as Marlborough. Many of the settlers were from Marlborough, Massachusetts, which had been named for John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, in the late 1600's.
There once was an important granite industry here. Stone from this town was used in fine Boston buildings, at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., and locally. Blankets and woodenware, including toys, have been manufactured here. Today, Marlborough is a residential suburban community, a town of hills and beautiful views of Mount Monadnock. It attracts the attention of summer tourists and vacationers.
