Jefferson NH Community Profile & History
Jefferson, New Hampshire granted charter in 1765, Jefferson, New Hampshire lay so deep in the virgin wildnerness at the time that few settlers took up their claims. Colonel Joseph Whipple, one of the hardy souls who did, cut a number of trails through the forest to build a manor house.
Shortly thereafter he named the settlement Dartmouth, after William Legge, Earl of Dartmouth and a patron of the Ivy-League college that also bore his name. Whipple, brother to Declaration of Independence signee William Whipple, changed the town's name to Jefferson in 1796, four years before Thomas Jefferson became the nation's third president.
