Goshen NH Community Profile & History
Goshen, New Hampshire is a small town in western New Hampshire's Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee region. Incorporated in 1791, Goshen was first settled in 1768 as a part of Saville (now Sunapee). The name Goshen may have been taken from Goshen, Connecticut, where many residents had relatives. Comprised of Mill Village and Goshen Four Corners, Goshen is home to the Franklin Pierce Lead Mine and scenic Gunnison Lake.
The Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee region is named for two local landmarks: historic Dartmouth College in Hanover and beautiful Lake Sunapee in Newbury, Sunapee and New London. Interstates 89 and 91 are the major highways into the area. (I-91 is in Vermont and runs parallel to the Connecticut River.) The region's westerly border is the Connecticut River. The towns along the Connecticut River, in both New Hampshire and Vermont, are also called the Upper Valley.
The Indian name, Sunapee, is translated as Goose Lake, so named for the many flocks of wild geese that used to land here. A major recreation area, Lake Sunapee and Sunapee State Park with Mount Sunapee draw thousands of visitors for year-round sports fun.
The Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee region is dominated by three mountains. In addition to Mount Sunapee, there are Mount Kearsarge in the Warner-Wilmot area and Mount Cardigan in Orange. All three have clearly marked access routes and are excellent for hiking.
