Fremont NH Community Profile & History
Fremont, New Hampshire once a part of Exeter known as Poplin, after an English mill town. The town was renamed Fremont in 1854, after General John C. Fremont, who was the first candidate of the Republican Party in the presidential election of 1856. Benton, in Grafton County, bears the name of Fremont's father-in-law, Senator Thomas Hart Benton.
This area was once famous for its heavy growth of high quality hardwoods, used for ship's masts. But residents began to use the woods for home construction, so the Governor sent a surveyor by the name of General David Dunbar to Fremont to inspect the town for illegally cut down trees. In 1734, the Mast Tree Riot took place. Locals rebelled by cutting down the tall trees prior to Dunbar's arrival. They later returned dressed as Indians ambushing and killing ten of his troops.
