Derry NH Community Profile & History
Derry, New Hampshire is a growing town in Rockingham County. A prosperous bedroom community for the cities of Manchester and Nashua, both less than a half hour's drive away, Derry offers a convenient location, a thriving local business climate, outstanding schools, and excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation and leisure.
First settled by Scots-Irish families in 1719, Derry was incorporated in 1827. A small farming community in its earliest days, Derry emerged as a center for linen manufacture in the mid-19th century.
Derry enjoyed a population boom in the decades following World War II as major transportation routes expanded and the Greater Boston region grew to encompass most of southeastern New Hampshire; residential and economic growth continue unabated today. Popular historic sites in Derry include Pinkerton Academy, founded in 1814 and still in operation as one of the nation's oldest private schools; the Robert Frost Farm and Homestead, a National Historic Landmark; and the renovated Taylor Mills historical museum. Derry also features several beaches on the lakes and ponds that dot the landscape.
Derry's school system is one of the state's finest. It includes five elementary schools and two junior highs. With several local colleges located nearby, Derry students can easily continue their education beyond high school.
