Settled on the banks of the Salmon Falls River in about 1624, South Berwick became the site of America's first sawmill in 1650. Logging was foremost among the town's early industries; during the late 1600s, the "king's pines" were floated down the river to Portsmouth for use in the construction of royal ships. During King Phillip's War in 1675, Native Americans and colonists fought each other in South Berwick, and most of the settlers' homes were burned to the ground by 1690. South Berwick over the next decade, and by the early 18th century the town had emerged as an industrial center for the region. Along the banks of the Salmon Falls River sat trading posts, warehouses, sawmills, docks and shipbuilding sites. Berwick Academy, thought to be the oldest private school in Maine, was founded here in 1791. The original schoolhouse is still in use at the center of the school's campus today. With excellent schools, a close-knit rural population, a bounty of rustic natural scenery and nearly 400 years of rich history, South Berwick offers the best of small-town New England living.
