Scarborough ME Community Profile & History

Scarborough, Maine , a suburb of Portland, is one of the fastest growing communities in the state. Scarborough was settled around a series of dispersed villages, each with a unique cultural identity.

Pine Point has always represented the town's working waterfront. Higgins Beach is a summer colony. Dunstan, the original center of the town, is its historic heart. Oak Hill has become the government center with the recent construction of a new town hall.

Suburbanization and commercialization have further expanded the dispersed neighborhood development process. New developments such as Pleasant Hill, Old Millbrook, and Beaver Brook have added to the existing neighborhoods of Blue Point, Black Point, and Prouts Neck. Scarborough has two new industrial parks and a major commercial development adjacent to the Maine Mall in the Eight Corners area.

Scarborough Marsh, operated by the Maine Audubon Society, offers guided canoe trips, canoe rentals, bird walks and a museum and visitor center at Maine's largest salt marsh. The nearby Scarborough River provides recreational boating opportunities and open space.
