Richmond ME Community Profile & History

Richmond, Maine is a small town seated on the banks of the Kennebec River in southern Maine. First settled in 1725, Richmond was incorporated from a portion of Bowdoinham in 1823. Among the town's earliest establishments was Fort Richmond, a fortification erected to facilitate trade between European settlers and the local Indian population. Though the fort was attacked in 1722 and 1750, it survived as the center of economic activity in Richmond until 1855.

Richmond is also home to Swan Island, once the site of the Perkins Township. Extant for the better part of the 18th and 19th centuries, Perkins township saw extensive trade between settlers and native tribes and was reportedly visited by such historical figures as Aaron Burr and Benedict Arnold. Swan Island was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995 and is now home to an extensive wildlife refuge, open to the public during the summer months.

Today, Richmond retains much of its historic rural ambiance. Boasting acres of open space, parks and recreational areas, an abundance of antique homes and scenic country roads and easy accessibility to Maine's Atlantic coast and the city of Portland, Richmond is an ideal destination for families and commuting professionals alike.
