North Berwick ME Community Profile & History
North Berwick, Maine is a small town in southwestern Maine situated near the New Hampshire border on the Great Works River. First settled by fur traders in about 1630, North Berwick was originally part of Berwick. The town was separated from Berwick and incorporated under its present name in 1631.
Small industry flourished in North Berwick during the 19th century, with the Great Works River providing power to local mills that manufactured textiles, shingles, clapboards, farm equipment and toboggans among other goods. The North Berwick Woolen Mill stills stands as a historic landmark and was used as a setting in the 1995 film "Jumanji." North Berwick remains host to a number of industries, including the Pratt & Whitney aircraft engine parts factory and Hussey Seating, a manufacturer of seats for stadiums and other entertainment facilities.
