Lisbon ME Community Profile & History
Lisbon, Maine is a town in southern-central Maine. Incorporated as Thompsonborough from a portion of the Little River plantation in 1798, Lisbon was given its present name in 1802.
Before it settled its modern boundaries in 1863, Lisbon annexed land from Bowdoinham and swapped land with Webster (now Sabattus). The division between Lisbon and Topsham (as well as between Androscoggin and Sagadahoc counties at this point) is defined by the Little River, which flows south into the Androscoggin River.
A mill town harnessing the power of the Androscoggin River in the villages of Lisbon and Lisbon Falls through most of the 20th century, Lisbon has established services and light industry as economic staples in recent decades. Just a short drive from Maine's Atlantic coastline and the cities of Lewiston and Auburn, Lisbon offers the rustic splendor of small-town New England within easy reach of numerous attractions and cultural centers.
