Kennebunkport ME Community Profile & History
Kennebunkport, Maine is a small coastal community in southwestern Maine. Contemporary evidence suggests that the area was settled shortly after the establishment of the Plymouth Colony in 1620, and Kennebunkport was incorporated as Cape Porpoise in 1653. Though many of the early European settlers were driven away by Indian raids, a permanent settlement was in place by the early 18th century, and in 1718 the community was formally reorganized under the name of Arundel.
In early years, Kennebunkport thrived as a small fishing village, and after it had grown into a bustling international port the town was given its current name in 1821. While commercial fishing and trade persists in the village of Cape Porpoise, Kennebunkport has emerged in recent years as a popular vacation community and tourist destination, with a number of shops and galleries, seafood restaurants and bed and breakfasts alongside historical landmarks and several beaches. The famed Bush compound, the summer home of former President George H.W. Bush, is located on Walker Point and visible from Ocean Avenue.
