Gray ME Community Profile & History

Gray, Maine is a classic New England town of about 7,000 permanent residents, located approximately 15 miles north of Portland. Gray is a four-season destination within easy reach of pristine lakes, internationally recognized ski mountains and beautiful Casco Bay. The town was settled in 1750 and incorporated in 1778 from the New Boston Plantation. It was named after Thomas Gray, a landowner.

In 1791, Samuel Mayall established the first successful water-powered woolen mill in North America along Collyer Brook. British woolen guilds had prohibited the production of goods in the colonies and tried to prevent British technology from being put to use in competition against them. Mayall smuggled out of England plans for machinery hidden in bales of cloth meant for trade with the Indians. When the guilds learned of his deception, they tried at least twice to kill him. They sent him a hat in which were hidden pins laced with poison, and then a box with loaded pistols rigged to fire when opened. Suspicious of the packages, Mayall avoided an untimely death. Mayall Mills would expand into the Upper Mill and Lower Mill, and lasted until 1902.

Today, Gray is home to regional headquarters for the State of Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, which maintains a fish hatchery and wildlife park. The greater Portland area offers scenic beauty, recreational opportunities and a wealth of historic and cultural attractions. Maine's metropolitan area sits right on lovely Casco Bay, a gateway to historic forts and lighthouses. Day and night, Portland's bustling waterfront is alive with activity and people: fisherman and ferries; sightseeing cruises and pleasure boats; restaurants and shops.
