Carthage ME Community Profile & History

Carthage, Maine is a small rural town in southwestern Franklin County. Originally incorporated in 1826, Carthage was named for the classical North African city. Its hilly terrain was once home to a limestone quarry, while the historic village of Berry's Mills supported small lumber and gristmills with water power from Webb's River.

Though primarily residential in nature today, Carthage sits at the heart of a major tourist region, with excellent opportunities for recreation, leisure and sightseeing in the mountains, lakes, rivers and lush forests that dominate the natural landscape. Nearby ski areas include Shawnee Peak in Bridgton, Sunday River in Bethel, Black Mountain in Rumford, Saddleback Mountain in Rangley and Sugarloaf in Carabasset Valley.
