Boothbay ME Community Profile & History
Boothbay, Maine is a town on Maine's southern Atlantic coast. The first European presence in Boothbay was a British fishing station on Cape Newagen in 1623. By the 1630s a few families had settled in the area. The inhabitants fled in 1675 during King Philip's War and returned in 1676. In 1689 they were driven out again, and did not return.
In 1730 Col. David Dunbar laid out a town known as Townsend and convinced about 40 families of Scots-Irish Presbyterians already in New England to settle there. This settlement survived and was incorporated as Boothbay in 1764. Southport separated in 1842 and Boothbay Harbor separated in 1889. Today, Boothbay is a regional center for summer tourism, with recreational and cultural attractions including the Boothbay Playhouse and miles of beautiful beaches.
