Arundel ME Community Profile & History
Arundel, Maine is a town in southwestern Maine. Originally a part of Kennebunkport, the Cape Arundel area was separated in 1916 and named North Kennebunkport. After a petition in 1957 the town reverted to its colonial-era name.
In its early years, Cape Arundel was a nexus for shipbuilding and fishing like many of Maine's southern settlements. After the development of a railroad in southern Maine in the late 1800s, vacationers began to arrive in Kennebunkport and Arundel, driving development in the riverfront portions of the town.
Today, Arundel remains a rural agricultural community with little industry. Arundel also serves as a bedroom community for the nearby cities of Portland and Biddeford. With a scenic natural landscape, an old-fashioned New England ambiance and easy access to the city, Arundel offers the best of Maine, past and present.
