Andover ME Community Profile & History

Andover, Maine is a small town in Oxford County. Nestled in the eastern reaches of the White Mountains near the New Hampshire border, Andover was first settled by the Merill family from Andover, Massachusetts in 1789; their homestead still stands on the eastern side of the Ellis River today. The community was incorporated in 1804, at which point small farms and expanses of lush forest dominated the landscape. Andover remains largely rural in nature today, with excellent opportunities for sightseeing, leisure and outdoor recreation. Residents and visitors alike enjoy skiing, fishing, snowmobiling, boating and hiking along the Appalachian Trail, which passes through the western edge of town. Nearby ski areas include Shawnee Peak in Bridgton, Sunday River in Bethel, Black Mountain in Rumford, Saddleback Mountain in Rangley and Sugarloaf in Carabasset Valley.
