Worcester MA Community Profile & History
Worcester, Massachusetts , known as the Heart of the Commonwealth, is centrally located in Massachusetts. The second largest city in New England, it is the site of a diverse and pioneering economy. The city has evolved from its heavy manufacturing past to new directions in economic enterprise. Biotechnology is a major enterprise within the city, as are eight colleges and a state university medical school.
Originally inhabited by the Pakachoag tribe of the Nipmuc nation, the city was settled by English colonists in 1673. Just two years later, the settlement was burned down during King Philip's War and the remaining colonists killed or driven off the land by indigenous peoples. Resettled and incorporated as the town of Quisigamond in 1684, the community would endure further attacks before a permanent town site was established around Union Hill in 1713. An important munitions depot during the American Revolutionary War, the community grew considerably over the course of the 19th century, when it emerged as a major center for industrial engineering, ironworks and glove manufacture.
Situated at the heart of historic Blackstone Valley, the city of Worcester boasts a diverse economic base, a bounty of historic scenery, countless entertainment options and excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation and leisure. Live entertainment venues include the Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts, which features touring Broadway productions and concerts; the Worcester Palladium, which offers musical performances by nationally recognized rock and pop acts; Tuckerman Hall, home of the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra; and the DCU Center, home of the Worcester Sharks hockey team and a popular venue for major sporting and concert events.
The city is also home to several prestigious colleges and universities, including the College of Holy Cross, New England's oldest Roman Catholic College; Clark University, home to the nation's oldest graduate school; Worcester Polytechnic Institute, a leader in engineering and biotechnology industries; the University of Massachusetts Medical School; and Assumption College, which boasts the city's largest campus.
More than 1200 acres of city-owned parkland are found within the community's 38 square miles. Rolling hills, the historic Blackstone River, numerous lakes and 54 parks, New England's largest urban wildlife sanctuary, a redeveloped downtown and many multicultural neighborhoods comprise the local landscape. Quinsigamond State Park offers a public beach on beautiful Lake Quinsigamond, tennis courts and several regattas and boat racing events throughout the year. Elm Park, founded in 1854 by Frederic Law Olmsted, is one of the oldest public parks in the country, while sprawling Green Hill park sits surrounds one of the city's seven major hills. The city's parklands are among the oldest in the nation, its free public library one of America's oldest, its acclaimed music festival the nation's oldest, and its art museum a gem rivaling those of major urban centers.
