Woburn MA Community Profile & History

Woburn, Massachusetts is a suburban industrial city located along the upper Mystic Valley. Incorporated in 1642, Woburn became an early manufacturing center, tanning leather and making shoes. Production was large enough that during King Philip's War town taxes were partially paid in shoes. The smallpox epidemic of 1675 cut deeply into the community's population, though further industrial development revived its fortunes in subsequent decades. The Middlesex Canal from Boston opened in 1803 and the Boston and Lowell Railroad in 1835, stimulating further residential and business growth.

Woburn continued to make boots and shoes for several decades, but by 1865 there had been a shift away from manufacturing shoes and toward the production of leather. Immigrants from Ireland, Nova Scotia and Canada moved to Woburn to take the jobs in the tanneries. By 1915 there was some diversification in the city's economy and residents were making ice cream, machine tools, mops and paper boxes among other things. The completion of two major highways in the middle of the 20th century precipitated a period of suburban and residential growth that continues to this day. Situated near the juncture of Routes 93 and 128, the city offers convenient access to Boston, the North Shore, New Hampshire and Maine along with a strong regional economy, several historic sites, and a bounty of cultural and recreational opportunities. Popular attractions include the conservation areas of Forest Park, Shaker Glen and the Horn Pond Reservation and a nine-hole public golf course.
