Winthrop MA Community Profile & History
Winthrop, Massachusetts is a historic seaside town just east of Boston. Settled in 1635 and incorporated in 1852, the town was named for founding Massachusetts Governor John Winthrop. The community was originally called Winnesimmet and inhabited by Native Americans, and in the early years of English settlement it served as a grazing area for farm animals of the growing Boston colony. In 1637, the land was divided into 17 parcels that were given to 15 prominent Boston men on the condition that they erect a building on the land within 2 years. Many of the early farms were abandoned or sold by the original tenants soon thereafter, though the house of the governor's son Deane still stands today. By the early 19th century a small village had developed.
Situated on a peninsula that extends into Boston Harbor, the town emerged as a popular summer resort in the late 19th century. Wealthy Boston residents erected estates along the peninsula's shores after a bridge to East Boston was completed in 1839, and The Cottage Park Hotel was established in 1850. Dr. Sam Ingalls purchased 43 acres along the Atlantic ocean shore and established a summer colony of several cottages which he named Ocean Spray. Several of the early cottages and summer estates survive today as a living reminder of the area's rich history.
One of the state's smallest communities in land area, Winthrop retains a close-knit, family-friendly atmosphere despite its close proximity to downtown Boston. The town houses several recreational facilities, including beaches, tennis courts, a skating rink, parks, playgrounds and a town landing, all within walking distance. A country club, three yacht clubs, a youth center and a senior center are also available to residents. Several shops and restaurants highlight the newly revitalized downtown, a testament to the community's continued prosperity.
