Winchester MA Community Profile & History
Winchester, Massachusetts has developed from its colonial village beginnings into a thriving residential community noted for its fine public school system, beautiful homes and easy access to Boston. The town was first settled on land purchased from the Native Americans in 1640. Originally an agricultural community with upland farms on the western side of town near Lexington, the tiny village of 200 settlers evolved into a bustling mill town with the advent of the Middlesex Canal and the Boston and Lowell Railroad in the early 1800's. Grist mills, tanneries and small factories along the banks of the Aberjona River comprised a lively industrial center.
The late 1800's saw Winchester emerging as an affluent suburban community, as wealthy businessmen from Boston moved out to the countryside and built substantial homes. The town's historic character is still largely reflected in the beautiful houses built just before and after the turn of the century. The village atmosphere, however, remains fueled by the uncommon civic spirit of its residents. Citizens take a deep interest in the management of the town's affairs and in its continued improvement and beautification. Local organizations produce annual events which have become traditions, including the EnKa Society street fair and carnival, the fishing derby on Wedge Pond, and the Thanksgiving Day football game between the town's high school and its rivals from neighboring Woburn. Popular recreational sites in the community include Winchester Country Club, believed to be one of the oldest country clubs in the nation; the Packer Tennis Courts, comprising 16 clay courts open to the public; Borggaard Beach, a swimming spot on Wedge Pond; and the Mystic Lakes, which offer canoeing, sailing, swimming and fishing.
