Wilmington MA Community Profile & History
Wilmington, Massachusetts is a suburban community in the Greater Boston region with a mixture of residential neighborhoods, commercial districts and industrial parks. Evidence of the town's community spirit can be found throughout the year in the various activities held on the Town Common. The yearly Easter Egg Hunt, Community Craft Fair, Summer Concerts on the Common, our week-long Fourth-of-July Festivities, and the annual Tree-Lighting Ceremony are just some of the events that provide families and friends an opportunity to come together.
Originally settled in 1665, the town was incorporated from parts of Woburn, Reading, and Billerica in 1730. It was here that the first Baldwin apple was discovered in about 1740 by settler William Butters, who cultivated the tree in his yard. The apple was later named for Woburn resident Col. Loammi Baldwin, who was largely responsible for bringing the new variety of apple to the market; for a period, it was in fact the most popular apple for export from America. Today, a monument to the Baldwin apple sits at the site of its first discovery.
Although Wilmington remained principally a farming community during the 18th, 19th and early 20th century, producing milk and eggs, suburban residential development has made a major impact on the town in recent decades. With a convenient location near the intersection of several major highways, commuter rail service to Boston, a close-knit rural atmosphere and a bounty of recreational opportunities, Wilmington remains an attractive place to live and work.
