First settled in 1749, Williamstown was named for Captain Ephraim Williams and incorporated in 1765. Agriculture remained the cornerstone of Williamstown's economy for decades, though a significant manufacturing presence was built up at the confluence of the Green and Housac Rivers during the 19th century.
