West Stockbridge MA Community Profile & History
West Stockbridge, Massachusetts is a small town in the Berkshire region of western Massachusetts. First settled in 1766, West Stockbridge was officially incorporated in 1775. The town grew out of Stockbridge, formerly known as Indiantown, and was originally called Queensborough. Historically consisting of five villages - West Center, West Stockbridge, Freedleyville, Rockdale and Williamsville - West Stockbridge grew up around the railroad, which hauled iron ore and marble from the region's quarries. An ironworks once stood in Williamsville, founded by Colonel Elijah Williams, with only the smokestack surviving from the original structure today.
A scenic rural community with a bustling historic downtown, West Stockbridge offers excellent views of the lushly forested peaks that make up the Berskire Range; the summits of West Stockbridge Mountain, Tom Ball Mountain and Harvey Mountain all lie within the town's borders. Near the center of town is a wildlife management area surrounding Maple Hill, and the many nearby state parks, hiking trails and ski resorts offer excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation, sightseeing and leisure.
