Weston MA Community Profile & History
Weston, Massachusetts is an attractive suburban town in the Greater Boston Region. Though just 10 miles from the city's downtown, the town has steadfastly maintained a rural atmosphere amidst the commercial sprawl of nearby communities. With easy access to the city, Weston offers excellent rail, air, and highway facilities. Conveniently located for shopping, sightseeing, dining and entertainment, Weston remains a quiet bedroom community in a semi-rural setting with little industrial or commercial base.
First established as the West Precinct of Watertown in 1698, the town was incorporated separately in 1713. The town's early economy benefited from the traffic on the Boston Post Road, with several taverns enjoying brisk business throughout the 18th century. The Golden Ball Tavern, established in 1750, and the Josiah Smith Tavern, established in 1757, still stand in town today. The 1810 opening of the Worcester Turnpike diverted traffic from the Boston Post Road, and residents turned to shoemaking and manufacture of cotton and wool machinery for economic sustenance. By the late 19th century, several wealthy Bostonians had established sprawling country estates amidst the community's hilly terrain, some designed by the nation's leading architects. Although the community enjoyed sustained population growth in the middle decades of the 20th century, strict zoning laws have preserved much of the stunning natural landscape.
Residents are very proud of the local school system and the handsome homes of Weston's quiet, well-kept neighborhoods. The town's school system has consistently ranked among the very best in the state, and in 2007 the high school was named among the 100 best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Weston has carefully retained significant amounts of open space, with over 60 miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, playgrounds, ball fields, golf courses and cross-country skiing areas.
