Wellfleet MA Community Profile & History
Wellfleet, Massachusetts is a town located halfway between the "tip" and the "elbow" of Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Nearly half of the land area of Wellfleet is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore and a total of 70 percent of the town's land area is under some form of protection.
Wellfleet is famous for its eponymous oysters, which are celebrated in an annual OysterFest in October. Additionally, Wellfleet boasts the second highest concentration of art galleries on Cape Cod, right after Provincetown.
Settled in the 1650s and originally known as Billingsgate, Wellfleet was part of neighboring Eastham until 1763, when it was formally separated and incorporated under its present name. Wellfleet's oyster fields drove the early economy, as did whaling and other fishing endeavors. The town was home to 30 whaling ships by the American Revolution. While the whaling industry was in decline at the end of the 19th century, Wellfleet had by then emerged as a major tourist destination, a reputation it enjoys to this day.
A diverse community with beautiful beaches, a bounty of natural resources and a still-active harbor, Wellfleet offers bountiful recreational and cultural opportunities along with more than 300 years of rich history.
