Wellesley MA Community Profile & History

Wellesley, Massachusetts is a predominantly residential town in the Greater Boston area. Its location and visual characteristics make it a highly desirable suburb for people who work in Boston. Although primarily a bedroom community, the town features several attractive office parks located near its eastern border.

The town is also the proud home of Wellesley College and Babson College, two private educational institutions, as well as Massachusetts Bay Community College. The community's public schools are also highly regarded; in 2007, U.S. News & World Report ranked Wellesley High School among the top 100 public high schools in the nation. The town derives approximately 85% of its tax revenue from a residential tax base with 15% derived from non-residential uses. The community has long been a leader in environmental causes, and the town's physical beauty is ample evidence of its preservationist philosophy. Popular attractions include the Walter Hunnewell Arboretum, which contains more than 500 species of woody plants along with a 140-year-old topiary garden; and the Elm Bank Horticulture Center, which features open fields and meadows, wooded areas, streams and pools, and four immaculately designed gardens. Each year the weekend before Memorial Day, the town hosts Wonderful Weekend, a celebration which features the Veterans' Parade, games and contests, live musical performances, and a spectacular fireworks display.
