Walpole MA Community Profile & History
Walpole, Massachusetts became a separate community in 1724 after a group of sawmill residents petitioned the Annual Town Meeting of Dedham in 1721. They chose the name Walpole in honor of the Prime Minister of England, Sir Robert Walpole. Early industry was attracted to Walpole as a result of the natural resources of Great Cedar Swamp, bog iron, and the Neponset river, which falls 151 feet.
With its 20 square miles of beautiful land and its close-knit rural feel, many inhabitants have found Walpole to be an ideal place to raise a family. Residents of Walpole are known for their work ethic, a very competitive attitude, a strong sense of community pride, and a neighborly hospitality which can be summed up in the town's motto: "Walpole, The Friendly Town".
