Wakefield MA Community Profile & History
Wakefield, Massachusetts is a desirable suburban residential community governed by a spirited, well-informed citizenry interested in both maintaining the natural beauty of the town and in providing a high quality of life.
First settled as a part of Lynn in 1639, the town was originally incorporated as "South Reading" in 1812. Early industries grew up around the new railroad line, which first ran through the town in 1844. In 1868, local proprietor Cyrus Wakefield donated land and money for the construction of a new town hall, and the community was subsequently renamed in his honor.
Wakefield has an illustrious heritage, many fine old buildings, and is proud of its educational system. In addition, the town has a state-of-the-art library and a flourishing cultural life.
The Central Business District along Main Street consists of banks, public buildings, specialty shops and professional offices. Town residents confidently assert that Wakefield is a well-managed community.
Adding to the town's beauty are its two lakes: Crystal Lake, a water supply source, and Lake Quannapowitt. The latter provides year-round recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike: swimming, boating and fishing in the summer and ice fishing, ice boating, hockey and ice skating in the winter. The Recreation Commission sponsors summer sports workshops, usually featuring tennis and swimming. The town's many playgrounds and parks host numerous junior sports programs ranging from t-ball to soccer to Pop Warner football.
